Quarantine Mornings

Morning. Sunlight fills my curtainless bedroom, waking me up at 7am. I begin the day by making my bed. I then head to the kitchen to boil water which I pour into a French press. As my coffee steeps, I water my plants. For the next hour, I drink my coffee and think about the Zen quote, To seek is to suffer, to seek nothing is bliss. Nothing to do but wait until 2pm when I teach my first class.

The next day, I wake up at 7am and make my bed. I boil water and pour it into my French press. I put seeds on the balcony for the birds while my coffee steeps. I drink my coffee for the next hour and then wait to teach class at 2pm. Outside, a pair of mynas peck at the seed and rip the dry limbs off a plant for nest material.

7am. I wake up. I make my bed. First, the flannel comforter that reminds me of the Midwest. Next, the star quilt from the father that I no longer speak to. I boil water and pour. I go through my emails. Coffee steeps. For the next hour, I drink my coffee. 2pm is when I start teaching. Plenty of time to pop small bubbles of anger.

Again, 7am. I boil water in my kettle, then I make my bed. I pour the water in my French press. Not sure what to do while the coffee steeps, but I get a message from you reminding me of plans from another life. We were supposed to be having dinner at a cafe on the stairs of Gemmayzeh. Instead, I am here, you are there. Nothing can be done but wait until 2pm.

My alarm goes off at 7am, but I sleep in. Eventually, I make my bed. I boil water. I pour the water in my French press. My coffee steeps. Not sure what to do, I stare into the chasm between now and 2pm. To seek is to suffer.

Wake up, make bed, boil water, pour water,

          water plants while coffee steeps…

put seeds on balcony while coffee steeps…

check emails and manage anger while coffee steeps…

pine over lost opportunities while coffee steeps….

                                                  ponder uncertainty while coffee steeps…

Drink coffee and wait to teach.

Wake. Make bed. Boil water. Pour. Plants. Seeds. Emails. Anger. Longing. Uncertainty. Drink coffee. Wait. Teach.

– – – –

Wake, drink, wait, teach
Wake, drink, wait, teach
Wake, drink, wait, teach
Wake, drink, wait, teach
Wake, drink, wait, teach
