“As I Was Riding the Escalator”

at Lagoona Mall, I thought I saw you.
I was calmly resting against the rail
inured to care in the daze of retail.
Then a slender black skirt came into view,
climbing the stairs, hurrying to get through.
My eyes followed the advancing female
when her head turned, and a face stern and pale
glanced at me like somebody she once knew…

This man seems like someone from long ago—
I’ve felt the gaze of those brown eyes before
and that gentle face casting its shadow
until I couldn’t endure it no more

After a split second, she looked away
walking ahead to move on with her day.
